Wallace & Ladmo Title: The Hat Sale Description: A Wallace & Ladmo Old Time Movie. Date: 1983 Comments: Here’s another of the Wallace & Ladmo Old Time Movies we did back in the spring of 1983. I can’t remember where we shot this one; I think it was either Pioneer Arizona (a museum-town north of Phoenix) or somewhere around Encanto Park in Phoenix. Besides Wallace & Ladmo, the rest of the cast is Craig Dingle, Vern & Charlie and me; I’m the first guy who enters the scene after Wallboy. This was the only one of the five movies we did that spring where I attempted to add sound effects to the score, similar to some of the original Old Time Movies I grew up watching on the show. I recorded the piano part at my home with a reel-to-reel recorder, and then overdubbed that with sound effects—I’m doing the clapping and paper grocery bags provided the crunching sound of the “hat stands.” Not ever having tried anything like this before, at the time, I was pretty proud of how it turned out (except for my inferior piano playing). I remember Ladmo delicately trying to tell me he didn’t think the end result was very impressive. Looking at it now, I have to agree. The audio is definitely not as clean as I remember it being—granted, there’s some degradation due to the age of the VHS tape preserving this clip—but I can’t deny it sounds amateurish. Despite the audio quality, I always felt that the music I wrote for this wasn’t too bad. Thanks to today’s computers, I have the ability to revamp the score into something that I wish it could have been originally—so, I’ve done that. Here is That Hat Sale in two versions: one with the original soundtrack (for the purists) and one with a freshly synthesized version of the music (I decided to leave out the sound effects this time). I think Ladmo might have liked this version better. Enjoy The Hat Sale… Dan Horn
